Neethane En Ponvasantham - Why they don't sit and talk through their issues?

OK. Not to convince anybody. But just why I like the movie.

Warning: Well, this could be a long post. And the language might be un-sophisticated.

I'll start with a line from my friend Ajay Ravi. 'All the issues discussed requires two people to sit down and think for a while'. I think this will be the main issue most of the people have. So they couldn't connect with the movie. But it is not that simple. It doesn't happen like that. I'm saying this from my personal experience.

Consider the characters Varun and Nithya. Both are imperfect. That's what makes them interesting.

If you see from the start, Varun never speaks his feelings to Nithya. He always keeps things to himself. And he is very conscious about their economic class differences and always feel little uncomfortable about that. From the throw away bits (Yercaud and Australia) to more obvious scenes when he proudly shows off his car, you can see this. That’s why he boasts about that IIM thing. Even though they know each other from 8 yrs told, he has never told her about his family. You can understand why. And they say it out later in the movie. That itself prevents that free talk between them. He just wants to get into IIMs and help his family. He did not have time or space for her at that moment. Even though I don't agree with him, I could very well understand him.

Nithya. She loves him so much. She is ready to sacrifice almost everything to be with him. That is very clear. But she doesn't care about his life outside her. She doesn't understand him at all. She never asked about what he is thinking, his aspirations or such stuff. She wants him all for herself. She is not giving any space to him to find himself. When he said he is going to Kozhikode IIM she just wants to tag along with him. If he had agreed to that, obviously he couldn't have done anything in his studies.

Even if he had explained everything at that terrace scene I don't think she was in a mindset to listen. You can feel her anxiousness and how she doesn't see his point or don't want to see his point. Again I don't agree with her. But people sometimes are like that. If they had done the best thing always they wouldn't have anything to regret. BTW, this scene was badly shot. He tried something, but it didn't work. I would have preferred the conventional close-ups.

Admittedly the movie doesn't have unique story or anything. But the personality clashes between these two characters and the resulting moments are so intriguing. The stretch between the day he meets her at the college to their meeting in Manappad was just excellent. Their love is somewhat superficial. But the movie is so much deeper than we give credit to GVM. Lots of minute character traits and psychological interplays made the movie for me. I was inside the heads of Varun and Nithya throughout the movie.Even at the end I don't think they have resolved their issues. Still there was lot of things they have to come to terms with each other. They will keep on fighting I guess.

On the negative side,
  1.  yes some of the dialogues are corny.  I have come to expect that from GVM. But at the same time there are some conversations which are so real and life like.
  2. BGM is a bit loud. Kaatrai konjam and Ennodu Va Va are unnecessary. But Satru Munbu, Saaindhu Saaindhu, Mudhal murai and Vaanam mella fits right into the movie. Especially Satru Munbu.  Just superb.
  3. May be two people talking continuously might be monotonous. But that is the movie.
  4. De-dramatization is intentional and worked very well for me. Otherwise the movie might have become more melodramatic.
